World’s largest e-cigarette trial has just finished recruiting

The HRC-funded ASCEND-II trial has just finished 19 months of recruitment, with 1124 people randomised to receive either 1) nicotine patches, 2) nicotine patches plus a nicotine-containing e-cigarette, or 3) nicotine patches plus a nicotine-free e-cigarette. The last follow-up visit is scheduled for May 2018, with results available July/August 2018. Read more

Nutrition labels showcasing healthy foods have no significant impact on New Zealanders' food choices, according to latest research.

"Their effect is pretty small and limited to shoppers already interested in healthy eating," says leading nutrition expert, Professor Cliona Ni Mhurchu of the University of Auckland. Read more

A new publication arising from NIHI’s work with a cardiovascular polypill (the IMPACT trial) a few years ago, which was part of a wider international group of studies (the SPACE collaboration) has been published in the International Journal of Cardiology. SPARX now in Japan

Ayako Shimizu, a 30-year-old entrepreneur and head of online counseling firm Hikari Lab, has introduced a Japanese version of SPARX as a smartphone app. The NZ version has been adapted for Japanese users under an agreement with UniServices. Read more

Rise in e-cigarettes linked to rise in smokers quitting, say researchers

New research studying United States smokers has shown the recent rise in e-cigarette use in that country is getting more smokers quitting, according to Professor Chris Bullen of the University of Auckland.

Dr Bullen, a Professor of Public Health at the University’s School of Population Health, says this latest study raises an important question of relevance to New Zealand - if e-cigarettes are effective at helping to increase smoking cessation, why are some countries restricting their sale? Bariatric Surgery Registry launches in New Zealand

New Zealand’s first Bariatric Surgery Registry launches nation-wide this week, an initiative that will allow surgeons to accurately compare outcomes for patients who have undergone an operation for obesity across public and private hospitals in New Zealand and Australia. The Registry will be managed by the National Institute for Health Innovation, The University of Auckland.

The Registry, a bi-national initiative by the Obesity Surgery Society of Australia and New Zealand (OSSANZ), tracks patients for 10 years following their bariatric surgery, recording any need for reoperation, as well as changes in weight and diabetes status.

New grants awarded to NIHI researchers

Congratulations to NIHI researchers, Joanna Ting Wai Chu and Gayl Humphrey who have both been awarded grants as part of the Cure Kids and Government-funded national science challenge A Better Start funding round.

The organisations this afternoon announced $2.8m for 10 child health projects which focused on obesity, mental health, literacy and autism spectrum disorder.
